Both crows and ravens are called 烏(からす/がらす). They're closely related, both in the genus corvus. Common names for organisms are not scientific in general in any language. Even in English, it's common for the same name to be used for widely unrelated species. Japanese isn't the only language to lump crows and ravens together.

i know russian also has the difference between crow and raven be just 1 letter (воронa-ворон)
we do have seperate words for them though (врана-гавран)
