I actually love Neptunia, especially Re;Birth3. It's always amazed me how Neptunia got so much mainstream popularity, considering it's almost entirely built out of obscure references and allegories. You've got this whole plot about NEC threatening to take over the fledgling console industry, and it's being hyped up by zoomers who don't even know what Bomberman is, let alone know about the history of Japanese PC gaming.

So has anyone played the new game yet? It's getting good reviews on Steam and I loved 4GO, but I just recently bought the new Fire Emblem and I didn't like Virtual Stars at all, so I'm on the fence about buying it.

I'll sound off after playing it. In the process of beating R;B2 right now, trying to fill out the Nepedia without guides is time consuming and (only sometimes) kinda difficult. EXE Charge 5's and Drop rate 5's help out very, very much.

I've lost count on how much times they reused the warehouse dungeon.

Are you going for 100%? A lot of players get burnt out going too deep into R;B1 and R;B2 and end up disliking R;B3 as a result, even though in my opinion it's the best Neptunia game, simply because its gameplay is so similar to R;B1 and R;B2.

Hopefully. I try to 100% every game I play, and I've only put off R;B1 because I didn't get appropriate DLC's for the level cap yet. I'm probably gonna end up skipping R;B3 and going straight for VIIR, with the expectation of playing R;B3 down the line.

I'm already looking forward to the mental trauma from a certain ending.

I've beaten R;B2. After booting up VIIR and getting sub-10 FPS in dungeons, I said fuck it and started Super Neptunia RPG. I'm 10 hours in. A Unity game has no right to be this good. And it only cost 2 dollars.

I hated Super Neptunia RPG. Maybe it could be good if given a chance on its own, but it's very clearly an unrelated RPG that had a Neptunia theme slapped onto it late in development. Other than some surface-level references it has nothing to do with Neptunia. It doesn't feel at all like a Neptunia game and at times goes completely against what Neptunia should be like.

I disagree completely. Even with it's overly serene tone and it's artstyle differing completely from the mainline games, it retains what makes Neptunia itself.

>Other than some surface-level references it has nothing to do with Neptunia.

It's a bunch of Neps stuck together in what's effectively a very different world. It's an enjoyable premise.

>It doesn't feel at all like a Neptunia game and at times goes completely against what Neptunia should be like.

An easy answer to this is that fuck off it's a spinoff.
A more detailed and nuanced answer is that most spinoffs are themed after a certain character (such as Blanc's zombie game, Noire's Disgaea clone) and this being what's effectively Majicon's game will, of course, at times feel completely off. It was also developed by a western studio (Artisan Games is in Canada and France) with Compa and Iffy adjusting things on the side. But all that aside, cute girls are still doing cute things and combat feels very nice. I'm actually looking forward to finishing it, which is more than I can say about a lot of games today.

Good Nepputepipikku my friends.

>it retains what makes Neptunia itself.

My biggest problem with it that it fails at this specific aspect. While most spinoffs are weaker in this aspect than the main games, everything in Neptunia relates in some way to gaming or the surrounding culture in some way. Sometimes it's using direct references/parodies, other times it's via allegories and parallels. Every location, every enemy, every NPC, every quest and every plot point is about games, gaming history, 2ch and related sites, otaku culture, and so on. Re;Birth3 (IIRC) had you fight Christmas, Valentine's and White Day as an arena battle named something like 'our enemies'. Then Super Neptunia RPG comes around and one of the first quests involves you helping some random girl get a present for her boyfriend, which has zero relation to anything whatsoever. Only the main plot and main characters (i.e. the surface-level themes) have anything to do with gaming, anything beyond that is just a generic RPG setting that has nothing to do with Neptunia. They slapped a little bit of gaming-related stuff on a game that had nothing to do with gaming as a theme.

Even Neptunia Virtual Stars (which I also disliked) was at least about a major gaming-related trend. Neptunia is supposed to be more than just cute girls doing cute things, even if the modern fanbase can't appreciate its themes.

That's a really, really big only for a complaint about Neptunia. I mean, you get asked for game cartridge taxes directly after the first combat. Sure, the sidequests don't have much to do with games, but to see that and go "THAT AINT NEP" is...

I'll say one thing - the setting itself is what prevents me from thinking it's another RPG with Neptunia slapped on top. Because while at first you get Lastation and Lowee, which you could possibly re-interpret as Just Another Fantasy Town #566, later on you get hit with a certain sea dungeon. Going "THIS IS NOT FUCKING CANON" after that seems kinda bad.

Well, if you insist it gets better later on, maybe I should give it another chance at some point. It'll be a while until I get around to it, though.

>Going "THIS IS NOT FUCKING CANON" after that seems kinda bad.

Well, if you're talking about canon, technically none of the spinoffs are considered canon (not even stuff like 4GO). But yeah, I was talking about the style and thematic elements, which in other games are all about gaming-related stuff but at least in the early game Super Neptunia RPG seems different in this regard.

I completed it. It was a fun ride, though this battle system left me wanting for more. This battle system was REALLY satisfying, but there is no endgame in this game save for one (1) difficult fight, so it gets boring after you become horribly OP because there isn't anything to do. Save for quests like picrelated, of course. There were also a bunch of perma-missable scenes with the cast that you get locked out of (and I did), but even though all that happened, I can't really get mad at the game.

Overall, if it was more difficult, it's battle system would probably make it the best game ever made. As it is, it's just a very good game. I will probably go for SvS next.

So. Uh. After looking at SvS's price tag and the amount of money I had left after discounted nep sale, I settled for playing 4GO instead. Here's what I have to say about it.

The story is usual Nep-style shenanigans, but this time it's more or less Vert doing MMO things and everyone else tagging along. It's simple, so I won't spoil it. It's made on UE4, which is unusual (compa screwed up a lot of things on launch, most of which are fixed by now), but that doesn't detract from the game's quality. As for gameplay, you basically take a nep and attack everything with it. Every nep has skills and you get SP to use them, which recharges at snail's pace as you attack and near-instantly with the help of items. Skills are fun to use, but I stuck with one character towards the end of the game. It takes inspiration from things like PSO, Mabinogi, etc. Beru did say something about castle siege battles at one point, so I wonder if they KNOW about things like UO, EQ, L2, Flyff etc...

Anyway, I managed to get all achievements from it, unlike Nep RPG, which had scenes I completely missed. It was a decently fun ride, but should you want to play it, beware: this game can be completely broken just by using a certain character all the time. Next up: Senrans x Neps. I hope it'll be fun!
